Reese and Cash

Off Campus

Reese and Cash form an affectionate friendship that gives Reese an easy place in the household’s social life and gives Tom a loyal friend who accepts his relationship. Their bond moves quickly from Cash’s delighted admiration of Reese to a familiar, joking closeness; when Tom tells Cash about his relationship with Reese, Cash both accepts the news and offers his support, while also acknowledging the public attention Tom fears.

An Immediate Connection

Cash’s enthusiasm for Reese emerges when Reese helps a student from his Philosophy of Religion class prepare to approach someone she likes. Reese confidently adjusts her appearance and sends her on her way; Cash responds by embracing him and saying he wants to spend time with him all the time. Tom is startled by the sudden physical affection, but Reese does not pull away. The moment establishes a contrast between Tom’s instinct to anticipate discomfort and Reese’s evident ease with Cash.

Cash’s admiration soon becomes a settled friendship. He and Reese spend time playing video games and trading bad porn jokes, and Cash’s habitual hugs and noogies give their bond a teasing, physical familiarity. Reese is not merely company: his skill at Call of Duty repeatedly helps Cash and Tom when they are in trouble in the game. Cash, in turn, treats Reese like a younger brother or adopted mascot, while enjoying his apparent knack for helping women with clothing and flirtation.

The Three-Person Friendship

The growing closeness between Cash and Reese changes the household dynamic. While Tom is away working, the two spend a twelve-hour gaming session together. Tom is surprised to learn how naturally his boyfriend and best friend have connected, but recognizes that the arrangement works. The friendship is not a replacement for Tom’s bond with either man; it becomes an unexpected connection between the two people closest to him.

The ease of that trio has limits. After Thanksgiving, Reese returns to campus still angry that Tom refused to spend the holiday with him or visit the Anders home, choosing instead to drive a cab. Reese’s enthusiasm about a new game does not erase the disagreement. The scene underscores that friendship and shared leisure can provide companionship without resolving the more serious conflicts affecting Tom and Reese.

Cash’s Acceptance and Support

When Tom tells Cash that he and Reese are together, Cash responds with teasing acceptance, joking that Reese completes Tom. Tom covers his relief by throwing a pillow at him. The exchange matters because Tom has made the disclosure a test of their friendship: Cash’s joking does not mean he takes the relationship lightly, but that he can accept it without turning it into a spectacle between them.

Cash also understands the risk Tom associates with being known. Speaking loudly enough for Reese to hear through a closed door, he points out that Tom would avoid the circus likely to follow if the relationship became public, then assures him that he has his back. His position combines acceptance with recognition of Tom’s fear; he does not demand that Tom make a public declaration to prove his feelings.

Friendship Under Strain

Tom and Reese’s disagreement about visibility eventually becomes part of the strain around their relationship. Tom explains that he fears not an individual person knowing he has a boyfriend, but the scale and amplification of public attention: once private information circulates, he expects it to become gossip. In a later conversation, he corrects Reese’s description of him as gay by saying he is bisexual, then apologizes, aware that the correction can sound like a denial of Reese. These moments reveal the difficulty Tom has in balancing an accurate account of his identity, his affection for Reese, and his desire to control who knows about his private life.

Cash’s loyalty becomes especially visible after Tom and Reese separate. Cash comes to see Tom after Reese has called him to say that Tom may need someone to keep an eye on him. Cash jokes about the alarming way Tom ended the relationship by phone, then asks Tom to get him water. The humor does not cancel the concern behind his visit: Cash has responded to Reese’s warning and stays with Tom at a vulnerable moment. Their friendship thus extends beyond gaming and banter into practical, dependable support.
